The Piccola Università Italiana Language School, Tropea, Calabria, Italy
Located on the foot of the Italian boot is Calabria, a region of unspoilt natural landscape, lush green vegetation and virtually untouched beaches. On the bridge of this foot, roughly where the shoe laces would be, is Tropea, a pretty little town perched 42m above the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea. It is about 10km north-east of Capo Vaticano and boasts the region’s most attractive piece of coastline, with several long, sandy beaches just a short walk from town. But you don't come here if it's action you're after - yes, there are plenty of cozy trattorias and a lively local marketplace, but Tropea is still very much small-town Italy at heart.
The Piccola Università Italiana is situated in a charming, traditional house in the heart of Tropea. Classes are held inside or on the terrace outside. The teachers are all native speakers and devote half of class time to grammar exercises and half to developing students' communication skills, thereby helping them to gain confidence using Italian as quickly as possible. Our teachers use up-to-date texts and teaching materials which include articles from various media sources with relevant Italian historical and cultural background information to supplement the lessons and generate lively class discussions.
Tropea never fails to charm with its romantic, winding streets, delightful cafés and stores selling fresh, local produce. The same fruit and olives that fill your shopping basket are grown just on the outskirts of town. The quiet, safe side roads found here are ideal for scenic, leisurely walks or mountain biking.
Further afield, the archaeological museum in Reggio Calabria and the volcanic island of Stromboli make for popular excursions. The Aspromonte Massif , a distinctive geological formation created by tectonic plate movements and consisting of a variety of metamorphic rock, also offers breathtaking views of Sicily - or alternatively take the short trip across the water and set foot on the island yourself.
